Beer game preceded fatal fall

The apartment where a University of Scranton student was found dead early Sunday was the scene of a well-planned beer-drinking tournament the night before, according to a search warrant.
Authorities stopped short of connecting the so-called "beer pong" tournament at 415 Taylor Ave. to Robert Skaf's death from the fractured skull he suffered when he fell down an apartment stairway. read the rest of the story here

Renick faces May hearing on alleged parole violation
By Bonnie Adams TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
April 17, 2002

Former newscaster Jim Renick is scheduled to appear in Lackawanna County Court on May 7 for a hearing on his alleged parole violation.
He had served six years in state prison for molesting a 12-year-old boy and was free for only a few weeks before he allegedly contacted his victim at an area business.

Mr. Renick, 52, was sentenced to 15 years of special probation to begin after his state prison sentence. Initially he was placed in the Lackawanna County Prison on a 48-hour detainer. The state Board of Probation and Parole then decided that he must remain in prison until the court decides his case.

County prison Warden Tom Gilhooley said Mr. Renick was moved to the forensic unit of the State Correctional Institution at Waymart on April 5. The warden said the transfer was necessary due to of mental health concerns.

The hearing is before President Judge Chester Harhut, who presided at Mr. Renick's trial.

Lackawanna County District Attorney Andy Jarbola had said the former WNEP-TV newscaster violated his parole by having contact with his victim.

Mr. Renick was released from the State Correctional Institution at Rockview after serving six years of a three- to six-year prison term.

State Parole board spokeswoman Keldeen Stambaugh said Mr. Renick was denied parole several times, but details of the denials are not public record.

Mr. Renick, who lived in Moosic, pleaded guilty to molesting a 12-year-old Luzerne County boy and taking sexually suggestive photographs of other boys.

'Gay Road' Changed After Residents Complain

Residents on a street in Ohio disliked the name of their street quite a bit, so they convinced local officials to change it.

The name of Gay Road in Dayton, Ohio, has been changed to Green Apple Road, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.

Families who live on the road said they are tired of the snide remarks about Gay Road. However, they insist that they are not making a statement about homosexuality, WLWT reported.

Gay rights activists disagreed with the residents, saying that they understand the sting of homophobia if they don't like living on Gay Road, WLWT reported.

Tree Sitter Dies in Platform Fall
Sat Apr 13, 4:28 PM ET
By ANDREW KRAMER, Associated Press Writer

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A tree sitter in the Mount Hood National Forest fell 150 feet to the ground, was badly injured and died before rescue crews could reach the remote site.

The timber sale she apparently was protesting had been canceled three days before her death, and the protesters expected to leave the area within a week.

It took rescue crews over two hours struggling up snow-clogged dirt roads to reach the tree-sitters' camp after fellow activists called 9-1-1 on a cell phone at about 7 p.m., Clackamas County Sheriff's spokeswoman Angela Blanchard said.

The caller said the woman, identified as Beth O'Brien, 22, of Portland, was unconscious but still breathing, Blanchard said. But by the time rescue crews arrived at about 9:30 p.m., O'Brien was dead.

She had unhooked herself from one platform and was trying to reach another by a rope ladder when she fell, Blanchard said.

Ivan Maluski, a longtime Eagle Creek protester, said tree sitters were days away from leaving the site after a three-year vigil.

About four people take turns living year-round in tree platforms in the area, Maluski said. After the cancelation was announced Tuesday, protesters said they wanted to see a final signed contract before they pulled out.

Another protester, who declined to give her name, said protesters were still up in the trees Saturday at Eagle Creek.

Sen. Ron Wyden (news, bio, voting record), D-Ore., an opponent of the timber sale, announced Tuesday that the U.S. Forest Service had reached an agreement to cancel the logging contract after an independent review determined the deal required significant modifications to prevent environmental harm.

At issue was the problem of blowdown, or trees not intended for logging being felled by winds on the edge of areas where cutting was planned. The Forest Service said tree sitters didn't influence the decision.

The Forest Service and the timber company, Vanport Manufacturing, agreed to cancel the deal, but tree sitters said they would remain until the final paperwork was signed.

Tree sitters live in plywood platforms attached to the upper limbs of trees slated for logging.

At least two others have fallen in the past year. In June, one man fell in the Eagle Creek area but refused treatment. In October, another fell in the Tillamook State Forest and suffered multiple broken bones.

Man takes sledgehammer to faulty PC
By John Leyden
Posted: 04/05/2002 at 15:04 GMT

After returning a persistently faulty PC to a shop five times over three months, a Wisconsin man snapped and took it apart with a sledgehammer in front of shocked shoppers.

Gary Wilke (aka Mr. Sledgehammer), from Appleton, Wisconsin, bought the $2,600 Gateway PC for his daughter in January. During its short life, the PC had problems both with its hard drive, and its sound system.

After taking computer to the shop in Appleton for a final time and smashing it to smithereens, the 51-year old bid staff and other customers good day before leaving, according to his own account. Staff at the Gateway Country store tell a different story. Wilke came out with a string of profanities as he pummelled his PC, they say.

In any case, Police from Grand Chute caught up with him and charged him with disorderly conduct.

But Mr. Sledgehammer is unrepentant.

He told local paper >The Post-Crescent: "I wonder how many people are out there complaining and not getting service. It feels good in a way."

If you're tempted to do the same, or worse, check out our guide - 102 ways to kill your computer. ®

Thanks to Reg readers for helping us fill in the deatils to this story - including the make of the PC.

Monkeys destroy library, stall classes in girls' college
By Indo-Asian News Service
Tuesday April 2, 2:11 PM

Kolkata, Apr 2 (IANS) Scores of monkeys have swamped a girls' college in the hill resort of Darjeeling in eastern India, destroying thousands of books, stalling classes, clawing and slapping the students.
The monkeys have torn to shreds at least 6,000 books in the library and broken furniture. The damage to property caused by them exceeds Rs.60,000.
Residential students and teacher of Loreto College in Darjeeling, about 625 km north from here, are now under constant fear of a repeat attack from the monkeys, which have made the college precincts their home.
College authorities say the aggressive animals were unafraid of human beings. The truant monkeys have destroyed the college library, clawed and slapped students and invaded classrooms bringing lessons to an abrupt halt.
The college canteen has been a favourite haunt for the monkeys and students have reported instances of food packets being snatched by the animals.
Help had been sought from the district authorities, but till now nothing had been done to "mitigate our sufferings," a teacher said.
Monkey attacks are a seasonal menace in the Darjeeling hills. The girls' college came under their attack last year as well.
The district authorities say their hands are tied as local residents oppose any action against the monkeys, considered scared by Hindus.
District forest officials say after receiving complaints from Loreto College last year, they had captured 30 monkeys and released them in a faraway jungle. But the local residents opposed that and stuck posters on walls condemning the action.
"So, this year we don't know what to do," a confused forest official said.
